The Piper Comanche offers Bonanza-like performance at a fraction of the price. Here's why it's a hidden gem.

Why the Comanche

The Piper Comanche is one of general aviation’s best-kept secrets. It cruises at 155 knots, has a range exceeding 1,000 nautical miles, and carries four adults in reasonable comfort — performance that rivals the Beechcraft Bonanza. The difference? A Comanche costs roughly half as much to buy. The laminar flow wing design gives the Comanche its speed efficiency, and the airframe is genuinely well-built. Piper’s Lock Haven factory produced the Comanche from 1958 to 1972, when Hurricane Agnes destroyed the production facility and ended the line. That finite production run means the fleet isn’t growing, but the International Comanche Society (ICS) keeps parts available and knowledge flowing. The type club support is exceptional.

Which Model

The PA-24-180 is the entry-level Comanche with a 180hp Lycoming O-360. It’s the slowest of the bunch at 135–140 knots but the cheapest to buy ($45,000–$75,000) and operate. The PA-24-250 is the sweet spot — a 250hp Lycoming O-540 gives you 155 knots cruise and enough power for comfortable operations at gross weight. Expect $60,000–$100,000. The PA-24-260 added fuel injection (Lycoming IO-540) for smoother operation and slightly better efficiency, running $70,000–$120,000. The PA-24-400 is the Twin Comanche — an entirely different airplane with two engines and different ownership economics. For single-engine buyers, the PA-24-250 with a mid-time engine and decent avionics is the value play in four-seat retractables.

Known Issues

AD 94-20-07 is the big one — the main spar inspection. This AD requires periodic inspection of the wing main spar for fatigue cracking. Compliance is expensive (expect $2,000–$5,000 for the inspection depending on what’s found) but absolutely critical — this is a structural safety item. Verify compliance history in the logbooks before buying. The landing gear retract system requires regular rigging and inspection — the Comanche uses a hydraulic gear system that’s reliable when properly maintained but can develop slow leaks and rigging issues over time. Some Comanche-specific parts are getting scarce as the fleet ages — the ICS parts network helps, but budget extra time for sourcing. The Lycoming O-540 on the 250 is a fundamentally reliable engine but burns 13 gph at cruise — not terrible for the speed but not sipping fuel either.

What to Pay

The PA-24-250 sweet spot runs $60,000–$100,000 depending on engine time, avionics, and overall condition. An IFR-equipped example with modern GPS and a mid-time engine will be at the higher end: $80,000–$120,000. Operating costs run $100–$130/hr all-in, which is very competitive for a 155-knot retractable. Insurance is reasonable at $2,000–$4,000/yr for pilots with 300+ hours and retractable experience. The Comanche’s value proposition is speed-per-dollar — you’re getting Bonanza-class performance at Archer-class prices. Annual inspections run $2,500–$4,500 for a well-maintained example, plus the periodic spar inspection cost.

Our Verdict

The Piper Comanche is the best speed-per-dollar value in a four-seat retractable piston airplane. The International Comanche Society is one of the best type clubs in aviation — passionate, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful to new owners. They maintain a parts network, publish maintenance guides, and host fly-ins that build real community. The Comanche isn’t a first airplane — you need retractable gear experience and enough hours to handle a complex single confidently. But as a second airplane for the pilot who wants to go places efficiently without Bonanza prices, the Comanche is hard to beat. Find one with clean spar AD compliance, a good engine, and decent avionics, and you’ll have an airplane that’ll take you anywhere in the continental US on a single tank.
