Mooney Buyer’s Guide — M20C to Ovation
Mooneys are the speed kings of efficient GA flying. Which model is right for you, known issues, and real ownership costs.
The Mooney Advantage
Mooneys are the fastest single-engine pistons for their fuel burn. An M20J does 155+ knots on 9.5 gph — no other piston single comes close at that fuel burn. Built with a steel-tube cage and wood-spar wing (yes, wood — and it’s excellent). The company has gone through multiple bankruptcies but the airplanes are rock-solid.
The most popular Mooney — 155+ knots on 9.5 gph. The efficiency king.
Entry-level speed machine — 145 kts on 9 gph, manual gear/flaps, $40K–$70K.
Which Mooney?
M20C (Mark 21): 145 kts on 9 gph, $40K–$70K. Entry-level speed machine, manual gear/flaps. M20E (Super 21): 150 kts, fuel injection, $45K–$80K. M20J (201): 155+ kts on 9.5 gph, the most popular model, $70K–$120K. M20K (231/252): turbocharged, 175+ kts at altitude, $80K–$140K. M20R (Ovation): 190 kts, Continental IO-550, $150K–$250K. Best value: M20J 201.
Known Issues
Retractable gear: Mooney gear is reliable but the system is unique. Check Johnson bar (manual) or electric motor condition. Landing gear donuts (shock absorbers) need periodic replacement ($300–$600). Fuel bladders: replacements cost $3K–$6K. Lycoming O-360 (M20C/E): bulletproof. IO-360 (M20J): equally reliable. TSIO-360 (M20K): turbo adds complexity and cost.
The Mooney Lifestyle
Small cockpit — not great for large pilots (test-sit before buying). Two usable rear seats but not spacious. Limited baggage space. But the speed makes up for it: a 500 nm trip takes 3.2 hours vs. 3.8 in a 172. Over a year of 100-hour flying, that’s 60 hours saved. Parts availability is good through Mooney Mart and the Mooney community.
Our Verdict
If speed per dollar is your priority, nothing beats a Mooney. The M20J 201 is the sweet spot — 155 knots for $70K–$120K and $110–$130/hr to operate. Join the Mooney Aircraft Pilots Association (MAPA) and attend their safety foundation courses. Not a first airplane — retractable gear insurance requirements are steep for low-time pilots.
